Feedlot

The distinction of our feedlot offering lies in its integration with our abattoir. We are able to fully manage all parts of production through this combination. This ensures the most effective use of both time and resources.

Quality is key

The cattle journey

The excellence of our feedlot offering lies in our understanding of how important a transparent cattle journey is. The majority of our purchasing happens directly from farmers, meaning there is less chance for the spread of diseases. This also ensures a certain and consistent degree of quality as we have established relationships with farmers.

Health and safety

The cattle lifestyle

The cattle’s feedlot experience is closely regulated to see to their health and safety. We can successfully respond to these needs as our scale puts us in a position allowing for agility. Our cattle being grain fed means their diet is regulated, cleaner and free from animal by-products, consequently producing better quality beef.

The feedlot process

STEP 1

classification

After the cattle arrive at the feedlot, they are classified according to weight and quality. Thereafter they are treated with veterinarian-approved products. Cattle that weigh between 180–220kg are sent to the field for backgrounding.

Step 2

backgrounding

Backgrounding is where cattle are kept in a stress-free environment to facilitate the adaptation process in the feedlot. The process is between 60–100 days. Thereafter, the cattle are brought back to the feedlot at an average weight of 240kg.

Step 3

Feedlot phases

The feedlot process consists of 4 different phases and lasts a total of 125 days. The phases consist of:

01  Adjustment (Starter): 14 days
02  Growth (Grower): 14 days
03  Performer: 64 days
04  Finishing: 33 days

Step 4

Walk to the abattoir

After the 125 days at the feedlot, the cattle are walked to the abattoir on Vencor’s premises. By walking the animals instead of transporting them, they experience minimal stress before they are slaughtered.
